Week 1 Review of Learning How To Type Faster In 30 Days!

Week 1 of Learning how to type faster

So yeah here we are… Just like I promised yesterday, today I am doing the not-so-weekly review of the “Learning How To Type Faster In 30 Days!” series!

I have apologised yesterday for not doing the weekly review after a week (duh), so I won’t apologise again (lol…)

Let’s talk about progress because this is why we are here right?

When I started, this was my typing speed (WPM): 58 WPM.

Now after 10 days what is my typing speed? (WPM): 73 WPM with 93% accuracy.

73 WPM monkeytype

Woah woah woah… That big of a jump in 10 days? In which I didn’t even practise for 2 days!? You can see all of my reactions when I went “above and beyond” my typing speed here. I journaled each day.

I am a New Man…lol

Every time I got a high score I jumped like a kid, who got his favourite ice cream without him knowing…

From 58 to 73 WPM, that’s 15 words per minute difference. In percentage that’s approximately 25.86% improvement.

26% in 10 days? My target was to reach 80 WPM in 30 days, but if I keep up like this I can reach my target in the next 7 days or for more surety 10 days.

When I started the journey it seemed like a huge milestone, a huge target… But now I feel I can do it!

The Addiction

I think I want to say that, after a while, doing the typing tests feels like an addiction. My body craved the element of surprise and the adrenaline rush each test brought. I was like, “Just one more. Last one”. 15 minutes just fly by when I start practising.

I never knew I would type this sentence in my life for typing. Literally.

I have watched several videos where people shared their typing journey and to my surprise, every one of them admitted that they also got addicted to doing the typing tests

After hearing that I felt a sense of relief. I thought I was the only one who was going crazy.

Milestones Reached

  • Day 01: Started at 58.67 WPM
  • Day 03: Reached 60 WPM for the first time
  • Day 07: Switched to https://monkeytype.com/ for testing
  • Day 10: Achieved 73 WPM with 93% accuracy

What Worked Well?

Home Row Typing. I’ve significantly improved my speed and accuracy with the home row typing style. When I started I knew my hand placement is not right and that’s why I chose the home row style.

Starting with lower speeds but gradually building up was effective. After 7 days (because for the first 3 days, I just typed using my regular typing style) I am now much more confident when using this style.

Consistency: I’ve stayed consistent, practicing for at least 30 minutes, every day, and that’s paid off big time. The more I type, the more my muscle memory is kicking in.

Key Techniques: Two things made a huge difference for me:

  1. Typing words as whole units instead of focusing on each letter individually. It’s made my typing flow faster.
  2. Using Ctrl+Delete to delete entire words instead of backspacing letter by letter. This saves so much time and keeps me in the flow.

What Were the Challenges?

I’d be lying if I said these last 10 days were smooth sailing. Around Day 07, I felt a lot of frustration. My motivation dipped as I got stuck at the same WPM… That’s why I took a day’s break.

One of the biggest challenges has been my ring fingers, especially with the letters “S” and “L.” It’s like my brain forgets to use them when I’m typing fast. This is something I’m still working on.

And the most important thing I have realized that, I was falling into “tutorial hell,” watching too many videos that were saying the same things.

There are no magic tricks for typing faster—it’s all about good habits and consistent practice. So if you’re still watching videos after videos then stop looking for shortcuts and focus on what’s working.

What Did I Learn?

Patience is Key: Typing fast isn’t something you can master overnight. It’s a motor skill that takes time and practice to develop. The only way to get better is through consistent, deliberate practice.

Good Habits > Quick Fixes: Instead of searching for a magical tip or trick, I’ve learned that building good habits (like using the home row style and keeping my accuracy high) is the key to real progress.

Small Adjustments Matter: The small changes I made—like using Ctrl+Delete and typing whole words instead of focusing on individual letters—have made a massive difference. Little tweaks go a long way.

Actionable Steps for the Next 2 Weeks:

Here’s what I’m focusing on moving forward:

Keep Practicing: I need to maintain at least 30 minutes of practice daily. My goal is to consistently hit 75+ WPM over the next 2 weeks.

Improve Ring Finger Dexterity: I’ll dedicate time specifically to working on my ring fingers. I’ve been struggling with “S” and “L,” so I’ll focus on improving that weakness.

Master the Home Row Style: I’m going to double down on perfecting the home row style and work on hitting 75+ WPM with accuracy above 90%.

I’ve made great progress in the first 10 days, but there’s still a long way to go. I’ll do the weekly review on time next week and keep pushing myself to hit that 80 WPM target by Day 30.

You’ve got this. Keep moving forward, no matter what.

Stay focused, stay consistent. Let’s go!
